Official Information Act request 23.09 Hall Place Allocations 
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 15 February 2023 for information relating to Hal  
place al ocations for the University of Canterbury (UC). You have requested the fol owing: 
•  Please supply data for each year for the last 10 years (2023 included) 
•  Total Number of places available in Residential Halls at UC Total Number of places allocated to Non- 
NZ-Resident Students (or "International Students" if such classification exists) 
 
Please see overleaf the information as requested from 2015-2023. The Public Records Act 2005 (PRA) provides 
detailed guidance on how long the University needs to keep different categories of information, via disposal 
authorities. Under section 16.3 of the Universities General Disposal Authority 702 (Information and Records 
relating to the management of student residents within student accommodation), information regarding 2014 
has been removed as the disposal authority allows for these records to be destroyed after 7 years. 
Please note that this data is for students who applied through the UC accommodation portal which does not 
include students returning to the Hal s or Study Abroad/Exchange students on group contracts. The total 
numbers of places at the Hal s of Residence excludes Taurima/Residential Assistants. For definitions on who is 
classed as a Domestic and International student, please see the glossary of terms here.   
Please note that currently 6 of the Hal s of Residence are specifical y tailored for first year students. The other 
4 Hal s cater for a wider range of students (second year and above, al  students or couples). For further 
detailed information on the Hal s of Residence, please see here.
