Narrative

Description:
Thames high school office staff received an automated electronic sounding message stating that there
was a functioning bomb on site.
111 notified and school evacuation completed as per SOP.
Circumstances:
Police attended and assisted with the evacuation. The students congregated on the school field well
away from all buildings. Armed police staff cleared all school buildings for persons and items of
interest. Once completed the students were moved to the gymnasium where they remained until
uplifted by parents/caregivers or school buses.
Other Matters:
Several parents arrived the school upset and concerned. Staff communicated well to ease their
concerns and the children were released as soon as it was deemed safe to do so. This operation was
completed by school staff and overseen by police due to the ongoing security concerns.
There were multiple New Zealand schools who received similar threats at this time. It is suspected
that the original call was made from oversees. Enquires are being made at a national level to identify
the offender.
