Request for information: Hormonal treatment data
Thank you for your request dated 1 April 2024 under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
You requested:
I request incidence and prevalence data on the number of individuals <18 years old
dispensed hormone treatments.
For NHI sexes: "female" "male" "other" and "unknown":
1. Incidence (number of individuals to whom drug was newly dispensed in a calendar
year who were not dispensed to in the previous calendar year):
Testosterone
Oestrogen
Antiandrogens (Spironolactone, Cyproterone) By sex, calendar year 2006
through 2023, and specific age at dispensing 0, 1, 2,...15, 16, 17.
2. Prevalence (number individuals dispensed to in the calendar year) as above.
In the excel spreadsheet attached you wil find:
Total number of unique patients (prevalence) from calendar years 2006 to 2023, by
gender (female, male, other, unknown) for cyproterone, spironolactone, oestrogen,
and testosterone
Number of unique patients (prevalence) each calendar year from 2006 to 2023, by
gender (female, male, other, unknown) for cyproterone, spironolactone, oestrogen,
and testosterone
Number of individuals to whom drug was newly dispensed in a calendar year who
were not dispensed to in the previous calendar year (incidence) by gender (female,
male, other, unknown), calendar year and age
Number individuals dispensed to in the calendar year (prevalence) by gender
(female, male, other, unknown), calendar year and age
The information provided is only dispensing data, Pharmac does not hold data on the health
conditions a particular medicine/s were prescribed for.
Provided is the NHI sexes: female, male, other and unknown. Please note that the NHI does
not capture sex (‘assigned at birth’ or ‘natal sex’), instead it only captures gender (‘gender
identity’, relates to an individual’s experience of their own gender). This can be updated by
an individual by asking their regular health professional to update the National Health Index
(“NHI”) with this information.

Where 6 or fewer people are counted, we have changed the number to "≤6" as we believe
this is necessary to protect the privacy of these people (section 9(2)(a) of the OIA).
In making our decision, we have considered the public interest considerations in section 9(1) of
the Act. No public interest has been identified that would be sufficient to override the reasons
for withholding that information.
