Dear Ms Exel 
Thank you for your Official Information Act request to the Department of 
Conservation, dated 20 June 2019. You requested the following: 
On the "1080 Science" website a paper from 2014 is cited where dogs were fed 1080 
poisoned carcasses of a rabbit, then a hogget. I am not sure if this study was 
conducted by DOC or just quoted in a DOC publication. Could you advise please as 
perhaps I should direct this query to MPI? 
If you have a copy of this paper I would be grateful for a copy, or any advice on 
where I can find it. 
Firstly, we apologise for the delay in responding. Despite efforts to locate your 
original request, we have been unable to confirm it was received by the Department. 
The study on the “1080 Science” website was not conducted by the Department. 
However, we can confirm it was quoted in a 2014 Department Application for 
Resource Consent, as part of an assessment of environmental effects. We believe the  
research was conducted over 60 years ago and have traced secondary sources 
referring to it as far back as an article in the Journal of the Department of Agriculture 
of Victoria (May, 1959). This cites experimental work by McIntosh, I. G;  Staples,  E. 
L. J. 1958 : 1080 dosing of sheep (Unpublished Internal Report. Wallaceville).  
The Wallaceville Animal Research station closed over 15 years ago. Despite 
reasonable efforts, we have not been able to find a copy of the paper. Therefore, your 
request is refused under section 18 (e) of the Official Information Act.  As you 
suggest, the Ministry for Primary Industries may be able to advise further, or you 
might be able to find the above paper at the National Library. 
You are entitled to seek an investigation and review of my decision by writing to an 
Ombudsman as provided by section 28(3) of the Official Information Act.
