Thesis Awards
Regulations
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) 120- / 240-point Masters Thesis Awards are
offered twice a year (for A and B Semesters) to support and encourage students conducting
research at Masters level.
1. Eligibility
1.1.
To be eligible, applicants must be enrolling part- or full-time in a 120-point Masters
degree or in the thesis year of a 240-point Masters degree and be doing either a three-
paper (90-point) or four-paper (120-point) thesis (or equivalent) in either A or B
Semester in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
1.1.1. Applicants who have already commenced their enrolment in a 120-point Masters
degree or in the thesis year of a 240-point Masters degree are not eligible for
consideration.
1.1.2. Where the enrolment period of the thesis covers more than one calendar year,
students are advised to apply for the year in which they are taking the majority of
points towards their thesis.
1.2.
The Awards are open to both domestic and international students.
2. Value
2.1.
The Awards will have a value of up to $3,000 for applicants enrolling full-time in their
thesis.
2.1.1. The Awards will be pro-rata for applicants enrolling part-time.
2.2.
Applicants may only receive one full Award in any calendar year.
3. Application
3.1.
The closing dates for applications are
17 November 2017 for A Semester 2018 and
30 April 2018 for B Semester 2018.
3.2.
Applicants must fill out the prescribed online application form and provide a one-page
statement about their proposed research (using the template provided on the online
form).
3.3.
Applicants who have undertaken tertiary studies elsewhere must also provide verified
copies of their academic transcripts.
4. Selection Criteria
4.1.
Awards will be offered on academic merit, which includes the quality of the one-page
research proposal.
4.1.1. It is expected that applicants will have gained
at least a B+ grade average for their
most recent 240 points of study, i.e. the equivalent of two years’ full-time enrolment.
5. Selection Panel
5.1.
The Selection Panel will comprise the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences’ Associate
Dean Graduate/Postgraduate, a representative from each of the Faculty’s three
Schools, and the Faculty’s Academic Services Manager (or nominees).
5.2.
The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no
applicants of sufficient merit.
5.3.
The Selection Panel’s decisions are final; following formal notification of the outcome,
no further correspondence will be entered into.
6. Awarding
6.1.
The successful applicants will be offered the Award on condition that they enrol full-
or part-time in a 90- or 120-point thesis as part of a 120-point Masters degree or the
thesis year of a 240-point Masters degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
in the year of tenure.
6.2.
The Award will have a tenure of one year and must be taken up in the year for which
it is offered.
6.3.
The offer of an Award must be accepted by the date indicated on the accept/decline
form. If a recipient declines an Award, or does not take it up by the due date, the
Selection Panel may offer it to another applicant.
6.4.
In signing and returning the Award acceptance form, the recipient will be deemed to
have read, understood, and accepted the Award regulations.
7. Other Conditions
7.1.
The Award may be held in conjunction with other scholarships or awards, however,
recipients of a University of Waikato Research Masters Scholarship, Sir Edmund
Hillary Scholarship or any other scholarships or awards which have a combined value
equal to or higher than $6,000 will only be eligible to receive 50% of the FASS 120- /
240-point Masters Thesis Award value.
7.2.
Awards may not be held by permanent employees of the University of Waikato or
Wintec.
7.3.
The Scholarships Committee may terminate an Award at any time, and recoup any
funds awarded, if it is satisfied that the recipient is not following the required
programme of study or is not otherwise complying with the regulations governing the
Award and/or the University of Waikato. The recipient of an Award shall have the right
to appeal any decision to terminate the Award.
7.4.
The University may from time to time vary these regulations.
7.5.
By accepting an Award, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning
the Award arranged by the University of Waikato.
