Re: New Zealand Response Teams (NZRT) in Southland.

Kia ora John,

Your original Official Information Request has been forwarded to me by the
Manager of Ministerial Services.

The Southland Civil Defence & Emergency Management Group no longer has any
NZRTs following the disestablishment of the Invercargill and Gore teams in
2011.

As a key partner in our Group, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has
much greater capability, resources and, under their new legislation,
mandate to respond to all incidents, particularly involving light rescue
or Urban Search and Rescue.

We also work with the two NZ Red Cross Disaster Teams based in
Invercargill and Gore and have staff from the four Southland councils able
to be deployed in the field.

It is also worth noting that we are working with communities across the
Southland region to establish Community Response Groups able to provide
welfare support at a local level.

There are no plans to re-instate NZRTs in Southland.

Hopefully this answers your question, please contact me directly if I can
help further.

You have the right to complain to the Ombudsman if you believe information
has been refused.

Nga mihi,

Angus McKay
