I refer to your information request dated 21 June 2023 made under the Official Information Act 1982 
(the Act). You have requested mark and grade distributions for Semester 1 2023 Health Sciences First 
Year (HSFY) papers (CELS191, CHEM191, HUBS191 and PHSI191). 
 
We have decided to grant your request, subject to the following comments: 
 
•  we note that the mark and grade distributions for the Semester 1 2023 HSFY papers have not 
been finalised yet. Once special examinations have taken place for these papers and all 
student results have been finalised, we will be happy to release the mark and grade 
distributions for these papers. These are scheduled to be finalised by the beginning of August. 
We are not comfortable releasing the mark and grade distributions for these papers before all 
special examination results have been confirmed – as this may affect students’ wellbeing and 
disrupt students’ performance in the special examinations.  
 
•  we appreciate that you have advised you do not need the results from the special 
examinations. However, we want to ensure that we protect the health and wellbeing of our 
students as noted above, and we also want to ensure that we are providing the full and 
complete mark and grade distributions for these papers. 
 
•  while we are not able to provide the mark and grade distributions today, we note that 
students who withdrew from the Semester 1 HSFY papers or received an Aegrotat Pass (not a 
mark or grade) will be excluded from the data.  
 
 
We will be in touch with regards to the grade distributions for the Semester 1 2023 HSFY papers 
(CELS191, CHEM191, HUBS191 and PHSI191) once the grade and mark distributions for these papers 
have been confirmed and are available. 
 
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request, section 28(3) of the Act 
provides you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review this response. However, 
we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
