From: Tom Zhang

Dear University of Auckland,

I am requesting information under the OIA in relation to the Senior Scholar Award awarded by the Faculty of Science.

I request the following:

(a): How many Senior Scholar Awards were allocated to Faculty of Science graduating students in the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023 (i.e. those that received the award in 2021, 2022 and 2023)? For the avoidance of doubt, this includes winter and spring graduation ceremonies that occurred in the respective years.

(b): What was the method used to calculate the GPA of graduating students from the Faculty of Science in determining whether they were eligible for a Senior Scholar Award for the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023?

(c): Will the GPA calculation method under (b) change for the graduating year 2024?

(d): Based on the GPA calculation method in (b), what was the lowest GPA of a Senior Scholar Award recipient from the Faculty of Science in each of the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023? For avoidance of the doubt, this includes Winter and Spring graduation ceremonies.

(e): Based of the GPA calculation method in (b), what was the highest GPA of a Senior Scholar Award recipient from the Faculty of Science in each of the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023? For avoidance of the doubt, this includes Winter and Spring graduation ceremonies.

(f): Based of the GPA calculation method in (b), what was the mean GPA of the Senior Scholar Award recipients from the Faculty of Science in each of the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023? For avoidance of the doubt, this includes Winter and Spring graduation ceremonies.

Yours faithfully,
Tom Zhang

Dear requester,

I refer to your request of 21 March 2024. The University’s response
follows.

“(a): How many Senior Scholar Awards were allocated to Faculty of Science
graduating students in the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023 (i.e.
those that received the award in 2021, 2022 and 2023)? For the avoidance
of doubt, this includes winter and spring graduation ceremonies that
occurred in the respective years.”
2021: 35
2022: 37
2023: 35

“(b): What was the method used to calculate the GPA of graduating students
from the Faculty of Science in determining whether they were eligible for
a Senior Scholar Award for the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023?”
For this purpose, GPA is calculated over 240 points of selected courses.
Courses are selected by (1) highest level (excluding 600 and 700 level
courses) and then (2) most recent. GradDipSci students are calculated over
the whole programme (usually 120 points), and awards are allocated
proportionally to the cohort.

“(c): Will the GPA calculation method under (b) change for the graduating
year 2024?”
This GPA calculation method has not changed for 2024.

“(d): Based on the GPA calculation method in (b), what was the lowest GPA
of a Senior Scholar Award recipient from the Faculty of Science in each of
the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023? For avoidance of the doubt, this
includes Winter and Spring graduation ceremonies.
(e): Based of the GPA calculation method in (b), what was the highest GPA
of a Senior Scholar Award recipient from the Faculty of Science in each of
the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023? For avoidance of the doubt, this
includes Winter and Spring graduation ceremonies.
(f): Based of the GPA calculation method in (b), what was the mean GPA of
the Senior Scholar Award recipients from the Faculty of Science in each of
the graduating years 2021, 2022 and 2023? For avoidance of the doubt, this
includes Winter and Spring graduation ceremonies.”

The University does not hold these statistics and is not required to
create them under the OIA. Your requests d, e and f are refused under
section 18(g) of the OIA.

You have the right to make a complaint to an Ombudsman if you are
dissatisfied with this response.
