Metlink API Documentation

Andrew Lensen made this Official Information request to Wellington Regional Council

The request was successful.

From: Andrew Lensen

Dear Wellington Regional Council,

I am submitting this OIA request as a follow-up to the previous request (https://fyi.org.nz/request/11057-metlink...) which did not have the requested information provided. To aid in this, I have provided additional context and information so that you can ensure the appropriate person can answer this query.

There is an API that provides realtime information about public transport in Wellington
avaliable here https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/*. I am requesting all documentation for any API avaliable under the above url, for example (but not limited to):

https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/FareZo...
https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/StopSe...
https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/StopDe...
https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/StopNe...
https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/Servic...
https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/Servic...

An API is an Application Programming Interface (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_API) which can be used to automatically (with a computer program) receive information from a webserver. For example, https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/v1/StopSe... appears to list all stops which have "lambton" in their name. Such APIs are widely used throughout the web, including by users who wish to (for example) develop public transport routing and analysis applications.

Under the OIA, can you please provide all held information on this API, including the request and response formats, including, but not limited to: request structure and parameters; a list of API endpoints, and any other documentation on this API.

Yours faithfully,

Andrew Lensen

Thank you for your request for “all held information on this API,
including the request and response formats, including, but not limited to:
request structure and parameters; a list of API endpoints, and any other
documentation on this API.”

The API you provided the link to ([1]https://www.metlink.org.nz/api/*) is
not intended for third party use as it can change without notice to meet
the operational needs of the Metlink website. The Metlink website is
currently being upgraded, and when the new website goes live in December
the API for the old website will be taken down.

However, there are new APIs that have been developed for public use. These
are currently available on the OpenData Platform, and you can register to
gain access at [2]https://OpenData.gw.govt.nz. Please note that as the new
Metlink website isn’t live yet there may be times when the OpenData site
is unavailable while we apply last minute changes.

Given this, would you like to continue with your original request for
information on the old API, or would you like the same information but for
the newly developed APIs?

Could you please let me know by Wednesday 18 November which option you
would like to progress with?

Kind regards

Dear Pareesha Mehta-Wilson,

Many thanks for writing to clarify. Given the changes you highlighted, I would like to amend my request to instead provide the same information but for the newly developed APIs.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Lensen

Dear Alice Clark,

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, The linked developer portal does not contain any published APIs --- after logging in, it states "No APIs Published. Your administrator hasn't added any APIs to your account. Please contact them to publish an API."

Can you please clarify where the publicly-accessible information that I requested is, as per your refusal under section 17(d) of the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987?

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Lensen

Unfortunately the site is undergoing some last minute updates which has
caused it to go offline. As soon as it is back up and running I will let
you know.

Kind regards

The OpenData Platform is back online at
[1]https://opendata.metlink.org.nz/. One thing to note is that to access
data from the APIs you have to press the subscribe button - there are
instructions here [2]https://opendata.metlink.org.nz/getting-....

I don't think anything is live yet but i was able to access the dashboard by fixing the sign up button.
<button type="submit" name="signUpButton" class="btn btn-primary signUpButton submitButton-customizable" disabled="">Sign up</button>
removing the disabled="" allows you to create an account.

all of the example api endpoints return transport errors
