Specialist school reports

Patrick James made this Official Information request to Ministry of Education

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for Patrick James to read recent responses and update the status.

From: Patrick James

Dear Ministry of Education,

I request all final reports and advice, created by the Ministry or under contract, relating to the 3 residential specialist schools since the start of 2023

If any information is withheld, i would like to know what date it can be released, and a commitment by the Ministry to publicly release it on that date

Given that the royal commission into historic abuse in state care is soon to be released, i believe there is immeasurable public interest in rapidly releasing a report about contemporary state care for traditionally marginalized and abused communities

Yours faithfully,

Patrick James

Tēnā koe Patrick

Thank you for your email of 20 May 2024 to the Ministry of Education (the
Ministry) clarifying that you are interested in the following final
reports and advice on Residential Specialist Schools (RSS):

- What has been seen within the Ministry. Can i narrow it to Ministry's
top 3 management layers?

Our initial search has identified a broad range of different types of
final reports and/or advice. The following key topics are covered by them:

 1. RSS property redevelopment projects
 2. Funding for the three schools (Salisbury, Halswell and Westbridge)
 3. Research evaluation conducted by Auckland University on the experience
of families and children who have attended RSS
 4. Responding to the recommendations from the UN Committee on the Rights
of Persons with Disabilities in RSS
 5. School Board appointments

Please note that the Ministry does not hold any reports on historical
abuse in RSS, as all post-1989 claims about open schools are referred to
school Boards as the body responsible for managing schools and employing
staff.

We would be grateful if you could provide further detail around the nature
of the information you are looking for, including which of the above key
topic/topics would be of interest, so that we might be able to determine
the information that is most meaningful to you.

Please provide a response by Friday 7 June 2024.

Nāku noa, nā
