Original Content Broadcast Guidelines

Dillon Pentz made this Official Information request to Television New Zealand Limited

The request was successful.

From: Dillon Pentz

Dear Television New Zealand Limited,

I am interested to know if TVNZ has any guidelines or broadcast clocks detailing (particularly for made in NZ content) how long show segments must be, and the amount of time to be set aside for commercials during broadcast.

I also would wish to know what are the guidelines for how shows are to be formatted for being sent to broadcast.

If there are set out guidelines for timing or for the way things are to meant to be formatted, is it possible to receive a copy of those guidelines or a summary of what they detail?

Yours faithfully,

Dillon Pentz

Dear Brent McAnulty,

On March 20th, 2016 I filed an Official Information Act request to TVNZ through fyi.org.nz that you had acknowledged (https://www.fyi.org.nz/request/3790-orig...). However, despite TVNZ's legal obligation to respond promptly, and by April 19th which is 20 business days after I filed my request, I have not heard anything since the acknowledgement made on March 21st.

While I can understand there might have been reason to extend the time limit, that fits within Section 15A of the Official Information Act, I have not been notified of any extension, which if that were the case would had to have been explained to me during the 20 business days.

I hope to properly receive a response, or the actual answer to my request in due time, and not have to file a complaint with the Ombudsman.

Yours sincerely,

Dillon Pentz

Dear Mr Pentz

I refer to your request below requesting information regarding the format of programmes.

TVNZ has no specific guidelines regarding the length of breaks. It is the length of the content which dictates the duration of breaks which are used to complete the hour. This balancing consists of advertising, mandatory messaging (such as Broadcasting Standards information) promos and news breaks. The breaks are inserted by specialist staff at TVNZ.

Typically commissioned New Zealand programmes are timed around 44 minutes (for a commercial hour).

Technical standards for the delivery of programmes to TVNZ can be found under “Commissioning”on TVNZ’s website: http://tvnz.co.nz/tvnz-corporate-comms/t....

Regards
Brent
