LAWS301 and LAWS302 2023 - Examination Mark Distributions

James made this Official Information request to University of Otago

This request has an unknown status. We're waiting for James to read a recent response and update the status.

From: James

Dear University of Otago,

I would like to request the mark distributions (specific marks, not letter grades) for the 2023 LAWS301 Law of Torts and LAWS302 Jurisprudence examinations (the examinations, not the papers overall).

Yours faithfully,

James

I refer to your information request dated 12 December 2023 made under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act). You have requested the mark and grade distributions of the LAWS301 and LAWS302 examinations in 2023 (rather than the overall paper mark and grade distributions).

The Act requires that we advise you of our decision on your request no later than 20 working days after the date your request was received. Unfortunately, it will not be possible to meet that time limit. We are therefore writing to notify you, pursuant to section 15A of the Act, of an extension of the time to make our decision in respect of your request, by a further ten working days - to 15 February 2024.

This extension is necessary to allow for consultations necessary to make a decision on your request. I note that a key member of staff involved in the collation of this information is currently out of the office. I also note that the mark and grade distribution for the LAWS301 exam has not been confirmed yet as there are student results outstanding - we anticipate that these student results should be confirmed by 15 February. We thank you for your patience and apologise for the delay. We will endeavour to provide the information sooner if possible.

If you are not satisfied with our extension of time, you have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the Act. However, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.

Ngā mihi
Kelsey

Kia ora Kelsey

Thank you for getting back to me!

It seems the distributions provided are the overall paper distributions, not the examination distributions requested.

The provided distributions very closely match the overall paper distributions provided at https://fyi.org.nz/request/24595-laws300.... The small differences can be accounted for by a limited number of students having had their mark entered after 24 November 2023. For both LAWS301 and LAWS302, there was significant non-plussage internal assessment, so in both cases I would expect the examination distributions to not be almost identical to the overall paper distributions.

No stress (I imagine there was just a slight misunderstanding somewhere in the chain of communication), but could I please be provided with the examination distributions?

Ngā mihi
James

Kia ora James

Thank you for your email follow up.

I have checked your query with the Faculty of Law, and they have confirmed that the distributions provided to you on 14 February 2024 are in fact the distributions from the LAWS301 and LAWS302 examinations in 2023.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions.

Ngā mihi
Kelsey
